Soul chess (encounter idea)

Here's one for you DM's that want an encounter where the players get to play chess & beat the ever loving crap out of a narcissistic enemy.

The players/player have just woken up from whatever slumber they were doing to find that a sharply dressed fey looking person is standing in front of them. Before any of them can ask what is happening, they re teleported to some sort of astral chess board. None of the party will be on the board, but will be just besides it. On the other side of the board is the sharply dressed fey person.

The fey will tell them that an "anonymous benefactor" [ie a villain] has hired them to take of the protagonists out. But due to the fey being a bit trickster, they have decided to torment the players. So they offer the party up a game of soul chess, where the pieces on the board are souls that have previously fallen to the fey. The fey says that if the party wins, they will release all the souls that survived the game & the party gets to leave. But if the fey wins, the fey will get an advantage in their battle against each other [drops all players hp by half].

If the players agree to the terms, they will play a round of soul chess. if the players don't agree, the fey wills still summon up the souls for the board, but will just kill them all out of spite. Nonetheless once the game is done/avoided the fey will force the party to fight them [breaking their word if the party won the soul chess game]. Once the battle starts, it will become quite apparent that the fey has 0 sense of actual battle prowess, this will lead to the fey getting there butt stomped & teleporting the players back to where they were before this whole fiasco, as a way to escape the party.
