Hearld Hearld & Hearld ( REVAMP Side quest)
REVAMPED Version
Here's one for you DM's that want to settle a legal dispute amongst inheritors of a will
The players are going about a more well maintained & prestigious area of a larger city, when they start to hear a lot of shouting coming from inside of one of the buildings. If they knock, or just barge in to investigate, they will find that it's just a legal dispute amongst three people & a lawyer. Before they leave, the people ask if they can be an unbiased party in this dispute. If they agree they will get to hear a quite interesting story.
Apparently, this wealthy farm owner, named Hearld has died recently due to health complications, & has left his estate to another person named Hearld. Thiers's just one problem with this, their are three other Hearlds who can reasonably be stated as the one in the will. The lawyer will then tell the party that they want them to vote on which Hearld is the right Hearld, but first each Hearld get's to make their case.
The first Hearld, is the half-brother to original Hearld. The two of them weren't too close, but he's the only family relative with the name. The next Hearld, was a casual friend of the original Hearld, & though they gotten to be a bit strained over the years, did keep in contact through the years. The last Hearld, is the owner of a local inn & bar. The original Hearld would go their every other week, & the business had been finically struggling when the will was wrote, so the owner thinks his stuff was given to him out of charity of helping his most frequented business.
After all of their stories are told, the lawyer asks them to now vote. Whoever get's the most votes gets the land & provides some sort of benefit to the party (the benefit is decided by the DM & should be stated beforehand). After they decide, the person who won will thank them & the other two will get very angry.
However if the DM wants a subversive moment for humor, have a necromancer walk through the door right as the vote begins. Que confusion & one hasty explanation. Apparently the Hearld in the legal will, is actually the original Hearld, & as part of funeral arraignments (which the lawyer hadn't gotten to), his resuscitation via magic would have happened at said funeral.
