Generations (Campaign Idea)
Here's one for you Dm's who have players that have a lot of characters they want to play, & or for those who want a tale told though generations.
The Campaign begins with the players being tasked to track down the lich queen & her closest minions' whom are up to no good. They will be fairly easy to track, since they are at the end part of their plans & are just rushing to finish it, so the players will have an easy time tracking them. They will track them down to an ancient underground city.
Apparently the lich wants to revive an ancient great dragon & has gotten the necessary supplies to get their. Once the players catch up to the lich & attempt to stop her plans, she will send out some lessor minions to distract the part while her & her main minions move on ahead. After the players finish up the lessor minions, they will track down the lich to an ancient chamber where her & her minions doing a ritual. When the player (inevitably) go into the room to stop this ritual the lich will stop & then put up some sort of crystal prism that it trap's herself in. After that the room will leak some sort of fowl air & despite however hard they try to not breath it in, everyone in the room will breath it in (yes even the minions).
After that the door to the room that the players entered in will open up & the minions will precede to run out after having a quick coiffing fit by the door) At this point the players will eventually leave due to the fact that they will be unable to crack/break the prism. After they leave they will start to feel horrible & no amount of healing spells/palm oils/health kits seam to fix it. If they go to any sort of professional in the field of medicine/divination/or people with high curse knowledge they will find out that the gas that they breathed in was cursed.
The curse makes it so that they all will die before five years are up & not only that who ever is their 'destined heir' (ie who the players chose to play next) will die before they reach the age of 31. If they also tell the profession about the lich & her crystal prism, they will either know what it does or know of someone who does know what it does. The Crystal prism is apparently a part of the ritual to open the door that will lead to the ancient great dragon & that the crystal shall be broken in a 100 years from now & that when it breaks, if the players' kill the one who cause it (ie the lich queen) their curse shall be lifted.
Now the players, knowing that not only they will die before that happens, but their heir, their heir's heir, & their heir's heir's heir, & maybe even their heir's heir's heir' heir, will all die before that happens. The players must form a legacy that can stand the test of time, so that inevitably someone far down the road will finally put an end to the lich queen.
But that's not the only problem they will have to worry about, because not only were they affect by this curse, but the lich's main minions were also affected by this curse. The minions will seek out ways to disrupt the player's lineage & a way to make it so that the player's will not be able to defeat the lich queen once the time comes for her arrival.
Will the player's heirs be able to carry their legacy to the end or will they stray? Will the lich's minion's heirs stay to their legacy? How will the legacies be decided, by blood, by merit, by the thickle will of destiny? I don't know since that's something that the dm & the players will have to find out.
