The Distant (Villain Idea)

Here's one for you dm's that want a villain that is never in the direct action of the story, but still affect it a great deal.

The distant, ever presence but never their. The distant is a villain that tend to not get their hands dirty, due to one reason or another, & typically isn't personally met till the end of the story/arc. The Distant tends to be smarter, or at least more self preservative,  than most villains.  Don't be surprised if the y make elaborate trap or conspiracy happens from their doing.

Types of "The Distant"

The Mastermind: Being far away, makes it much easier to plan. The mastermind  uses the lack of 'distraction' as a way to help them plan. After all pre-planning & a multitude of alternate plans can allows someone to succeed where they should have failed. Their followers tend to either be other planners, & or dullards that got convinced about how great 'the distant' is.

The Puppet Master: Being far away, makes it much easier to manipulate. The puppet master allows for the lack of a 'bad reputation' that comes along with upfront & brutal confrontations, to make it easier for them to manipulate those towards their will. Their followers tend to people that were convinced that the puppet master's goal was more important than their own lives.

The Mortality: Being far away, makes it much easier to not die. The mortality once thrived in the thrill of combat & the deaths of others, due to the belief that they were invincible. But that all soon came to a head when a too close a death experience reminded them that even they could die. They have taken this lesson close to heart & are now tiring to run their operations from far away (To varying degrees of success). Their followers tend to be the people they recruited, before the reminder of their own mortality.

The Anchored: Being far away, makes it much easier to dream of being somewhere else. The anchored didn't ask for this, but none the less are stuck with this. Due to one reason or another they have been stuck in one location for a multitude of years. They have learned to cope with this & can now run their operations as effectively as the have before. Their followers tend to be those who like a monetary incentive.
