90 Days Till Endless Night (campaign idea)
Here's one for you Dm's that want a more straight forward campaign where traveling is a main part of it.
Backstory: A Long time ago there were once two celestials. One of the celestial was the controller of the Sun & life, the other was the controller of the moon & undeath. They were lovers & with their love the world stayed in balanced. However as time went on, there love became sour & in a moment of rage one tried to kill the other. The effort both succeeded & failed, as now they were both doomed to die. Before either of them met there final fate they decreed there power onto two people in the planet that they've maintained all these years. The celestial of the sun & life decreed there powers to a young girl in a remote village on the tallest mountain. The girl would go on to become the valued sun sage, due to her control of the sun, & so happens to still be alive to this day, due to the power of life that was invested in her. The one the other celestial chose has been lost to time, but it has bounced of from person to person & is now in the hands of young vampire lord. This is where our campaign starts.
The Actual Campaign: The Players are called by one of the understudies that works for the sun sage. Apparently she has been cursed with a spell that has created unholy thorns that grow in the inside of her body. The party is informed that this curse will kill her in 90 days. Thankfully one of the other understudies was able to find out who caused this curse, it could have only come from the young vampire lord who controls the moon. The Second understudy tells the party all the rest they know about the curse & the young vampire lord.
There's the basic info on the curse & how to slow down it's effectiveness (which the understudies are currently/already have done). The Curse also has some specific requirements to be casted. First the caster will have to cast it from their own body, so in the case of their death, the curse will be lifted. Second, the curse makes it so that the person who casted it can't leave the location that they casted it in, UNLESS they are under threat of being majorly harmed, in which case it will be increased to a 5 mile radius around where it was first casted. Third & Lastly, the only way to lift the curse (besides the death of the caster or the person affected) will be to make the caster stop casting the spell, by having the caster destroy the place they casted it in.
With this information the understudy tells the party that the vampire lord is located in [insert city name here] which is nearly half the way across the globe. Not only that, but the vampire lord has hired many different people to come & try & stop the party (mostly though tring to kill them) [The dm can decided if they are informed of this last part]. With all of this the party will be sent off on their journey to stop the vampire lord's plan.
Campaign Effects:
-After 45 days have passed, the sun will start to come up faster, & then leave for longer (due to the instability of the sun sage's health). Night will become 3 hours longer. This effect will increase as the days go by.
-After 80 days have passed, the sun will slow down to the point where it is just stopped in the sky & soon the moon will stop right in front of it, causing an eclipse to happen for the last 10 days.
-After 89 Days have passed [& or if the players go to confront the vampire lord] , the sun will slowly start to go bellow the horizon (followed by the moon which is still causing it eclipse) & once it goes out sight of the party, the moon will rise up to the middle of the sky & start to give off an irrey purple glow.
-If the party stops the curse, the moon will slowly start to go back to it's natural orbit, as the sun returns from a horizon glowing more powerful than it has before, Signifying that the players have successfully stopped the curse from killing the sun sage.
-If the party fails to stop the curse before day 90 & or die to the vampire lord, they will see that the irrey purple glow coming from the moon starts to intensify into a pure dark glow. It will slowly spread throughout the sky, blocking even the starts in the far distance, & cause the world to be plunged into a endless night.
